2017 Sunday Slay...

At least that is what the kids call it "slay". I love that word.

Hello Family and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I attend church services on Sundays so from now on I'm going to title my sunday post "Sunday Slay". Pretty Original lol. Forgive me I'm a cornball.

So I wanted some sparkle on this day and wanted to be comfortable also because I attendedd a church service last night called watch service and a 7:30 am service this morning.

I found a pair of my regular pair of size 18 wideleg high waist pinstripe pants that fit. Yeah me. I wore my afro lady t-shirt my pattent leather heels and black sweater with flecks of white in it. My denim hat and my beautiful Cherry red bag a Christmas gift from my oldest neice. She is such a sweetheart. I really liked this fit. This was a mix of thrift and cheepy retail stores here in Chicago called cititrends.

I attended a Watch service last night and took a quick selfie. A explanation of Watch service is at the end if you care to read. I've been attending for as long as I can remember.

Again thank you for reading and happy 2017.

Watch Service-On This date in 1862 the first Watch Night Services were celebrated in Back communities in America.

The Watch Night service can be traced back to gatherings also known as “Freedom’s Eve.” On that night, Black slaves and free blacks came together in churches and private homes all across the nation awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law. At the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863; all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free. When the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as many people fell to their knees and thanked God.

Blacks have gathered in churches annually on New Year’s Eve ever since, praising God for bringing us safely through another year. It’s been over a century since the first Freedom’s Eve and tradition still brings us together at this time every year to celebrate “how we got over.” This celebration takes many African American decendants of slaves into a new year with praise and worship. The service usually begins anywhere from 7 p.m. To 10 p.m. And ends at midnight with the entrance of the New Year. Some people come to church first, before going out to celebrate, for others, church is the only New Year’s Eve event.

Oh my gosh--I can't believe that you got your baby bump into those pants!  But they look really cute on you.  Dressing the bump became such a huge problem for me when I was pregnant because I got so darn big!  Do you know the trick of extending the button/button hole with a hairband elastic?  I did that and continued to wear a lot of my favorite pants with a tunic pulled down low over the top.

ETA--thank you for the education about Watch Night service.

What a wonderful tradition and time to contemplate the meaning of freedom.  I find it so fascinating that your baby bump is so visible in profile but that I would probably miss it looking at you straight on.

Love your style, smile, and participation here.  I hope to make it to CHI eventually to visit DD and maybe meet you IRL -- recognizing that your life will be a lot more complicated by then, what with having a little one and all.

So much adorable joy!  Your little belly is too cute in those pants. Slay indeed!

Emily K. I looked at the elastic band trick from the hacks on youtube. I cried when I had to pack away thr rest of my "normal clothes. I out grew them quickly. Lol I only kept out 2 pairs of pants. These and a pair of yoga pants.

Donna F. It would be great to meet you in real life. The best time is the summer. Do many things to do and see. I've been told that you can see my bump better from the side.

Traci & Meredith , Chris987 & Jaileen thank you so very much.

I'm glad you all liked reading about the Night Watch Service it is such a great part of the American Experience.

You are looking wonderful and I love the pop of red that your bag provides. That will be a very handy bag once your baby arrives, as you will be carrying all sorts of supplies with you. Thank you for explaining the Watch Night tradition. You did well to get up for a 7.30am service the next day!

  • Jaime replied 7 years ago

I did not know about Watch Night and I will now always remember it on New Year's. Thank you. I found your description very moving.

And your pants! Whoa, those are wonderful and fit you and your little one so well! You are fabulous!

Hey everyone I forgot to mention officially we are 25 weeks and 3 days.

I figured I would count down by holidays and birthdays in my family. It makes the time go quickly.

For me size 18 is a very comfortable size. I hope to wear my clothing after maternity. That is why I've bought so little maternity wear.

Maternity wear is extremely expensive to me and plus is crazy. I'm like we are saving for childcare and college. Lol I mean I am thrifty. Lol

Again I love the importance and tradition of Watch Service. We have praise music and celebrate the rich history of this night.

  • Thea replied 7 years ago

Ledonna, your style always shines with your great smile and sparkly eyes! The first outfit is cute, love the splash of color from the red purse (a great style to use for baby gear too). Thanks for the explanation of the Watch service, I learn so much from you and the other ladies who take the time to write.

  • Nadya replied 7 years ago

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

The pants are great. I also like the jacket shrug in the last pic a whole lot, esp with the blue.

I love the idea of the Watch Service. Now that's a beautiful tradition.

  • Sisi replied 7 years ago

Happy New Year Ledonna! I wish you all the best. You look stylish as always. Thank you for sharing the information about the Watch Service - I think it is a wonderul tradition!

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

Again happy New Year i hope everyone had. A great time celebrating. Can you believe its 2017 already?

Again the celebration of the watch service is very important to me and a tradition I'd love to pass on to little nugget.

  • LaPed replied 7 years ago

You look gorgeous!! The hat really makes the look, and those pants are such a perfect fit -- I just gave up on pants altogether while I was pregnant ;) .

Thanks for the post on Watch Night and Freedom's Eve -- it will be a wonderful tradition to share with LO.

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

La Pedestrian I feel you. I've only only one pair of denim maternity jeans and im so tired of them.

Denim Dresses and leggins get me through the work week. With Pregnancy brain" i cannot think during the week so i put together complete wadrobe outfits so i can grab and go. On the weekends and fir events i can get more creative.

My goal this year is to take more pictures of my work fits.

  • Mary Beth (formerly LBD) replied 7 years ago

Yep, we are having our 1st baby at 43 in April of 2017. Thank you very much.

  • Kate replied 7 years ago

As always Ledonna, 'm wowed by your style!

Thank you for sharing the tradition of the Watch Service, I didn't know about it. How beautiful it is, and how moving it must be to celebrate, and now to be able to pass on that tradition to your own daughter in the coming years.

  • Lucy replied 7 years ago

You look amazing. Those pants - wow. And that red bag is fantastic.
Thank you for sharing the New Years tradition with us - being from Australia I didn't know this was such an important event in the calendar. It's good to be reminded.

  • Bennett replied 7 years ago

Thanks for sharing the Watch Night tradition. Such a joyous way to bring in the new year! The messages on the wall and the banner of the church are very moving, as well.

And thanks for bringing such a positive attitude to YLF! I'm imagining your little baby dressed to slay, just like mom!

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

Thank you for taking the time to read about the watch night service. Although it is not a recognized calendar celebration many African Americans remember and celebrate this rich history.

I look forward to all the joys of the coming new year

  • Lisa replied 7 years ago

Happy New Year!  You are looking lovely, and the pants have a really fun detail with the buttons.  And thanks for the info on watch night service, I knew nothing about this.  It's always nice to learn something new.
